Islamic State claims Shia mosque bombing in Kabul

The Islamic State on Monday claimed a suicide blast at a Shia mosque in Kabul that killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens, according to the jihadist group's Amaq news outlet.

The victims of Monday's bombing included children and women, Afghan news agency Pajhwok quoted eyewitnesses as saying.

Monday's bombing took place at lunchtime during a service to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Mohammed's grandson and a Shia martyr.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, NATO, the United Nations and the Afghan Taliban condemned the blast.

It was the latest of several recent attacks on Afghanistan's minority Shia community claimed by IS.

The Sunni Muslim militant group took credit for a gun attack on a shrine in Kabul in October in which at least 14 people died, a blast at a mosque in October in the northern province of Balkh in which at least 14 people died and a suicide bombing at a Shia protest march in July that killed 80.
