Italian convicted of 1990 double murder arrested in Germany

Police in Germany on Thursday arrested an Italian fugitive who was jailed for life for the 1990 murder of his sister and her brother-in-law 26 years ago in western Sicily.

Enforcing an Italian arrest warrant, German authorities detained 54-year-old Giuseppe Vaiana at an internet cafe in Ludwigshafen, south-western Germany, Italy's finance police said in a statement.

At the time of his arrest, Vaiana was playing on a slot machine, police said.

Vaiana went on the run in May after a court in Trapani convicted him and his brother of killing their sister Caterina and her brother-in-law Paolo Favara at a sheepfold on 24 August, 1990, in a village near Trapani.

The double murders remained a cold case until 2013 when testimonies from the victims' children brought Vaiana and his brother Michele to trial. Both men were sentenced to life imprisonment for the killings and Vaina's brother Michele Claudio is already behind bars.

Caterina met her death to ensure she would not report the alleged rape of her 7-year-old daughter by Giuseppe, while Favara was killed because he and Caterina, with whom he was having an affair, owed their murderers 7,000 euros, it emerged during the trial.

Vaina and his brother lived Castelvetrano, stronghold of Matteo Messina Denaro, the fugitive head of the Sicilian mafia, who has been on the run for decades.
