A 12-year-old girl sustained multiple fractures but survived after throwing herself off her second-floor balcony in the northern city of Pordenone and writing to classmates "now you'll be happy".

A sun blind on a first-floor balcony broke the girl's fall. She was hospitalised in intensive care but doctors ruled out a possible spine injury.

"I couldn't face going back to school after I was ill. Now you'll be happy," the girl had written in one suicide note left in the family apartment.

"I was afraid to shout my fears to the world so I decided to end it all," the note continued.

A second note the girl's parents asked their forgiveness. Both notes are believed to have been written last week.

Police are examining the girl's social media activity to try and find out what triggered her suicide attempt, and have carried out interviews at her school.

"There was no indication that this would happen and less still of any signs of bullying. We are shocked and upset," said the school's headmistress quoted by Corriere della Sera daily.
