Italian health minister signs food charter at Expo

Italy's health minister Beatrice Lorenzin and her counterparts from around the world were among signatories on Wednesday to a charter pledging the right to food and a healthy, just and sustainable planet.

The so-called Milan Charter was hammered out at the six-month-long Milan Expo 2015 trade fair themed 'Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life' which ends on Saturday.

"The Milan Charter contains the legacy of Expo and translates this into concrete, targeted policies," said Lorenzin.

"We have already begun. During these past days we signed key accords with countries from all over the world on cooperation on food security, labelling, agrifood systems, sustainability and non-infectious disease prevention and in many other areas of public health," Lorenzin stated.

The signing of the Milan Charter came at the end of a two-day international conference, 'Feeding the planet, feeding it healthy'.

Speakers at the conference included Lorenzin, Lombardy regional governor Roberto Maroni, Expo chief Giuseppe Sala and senior United Nations World Health Organisation official Oleg Chestnov.

Expo 2015, the first world trade fair to be held in Milan since 1906, has focused on food-related issues, in particular innovative ways of producing sustainable food to end world hunger.
