Members of Italy's lower house of parliament voted into law the populist government's controversial new security decree by 322 votes in favour, 90 against and one abstention.
The decree, the brainchild of hardline interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini, toughens the sanctions on charity ships that bring migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to Italian territory and introduces new policing measures and rules for sporting events.
Decrees issued by Italy's government must be converted in law by parliamentary votes within 60 days.
