Venezuela's deputy minister for European affairs Yves Gil had a hearing at the Italian Senate cancelled on Wednesday after it passed a resolution calling for free and fair presidential elections to be held swiftly in the crisis-hit nation.

Venezuela's ambassador to Italy Julian Isaias and its National Assembly's foreign affairs committee chief Francisco Sucre were still due to address the Senate on Wednesday after the resolution backed by both houses of parliament on Tuesday.

The resolution's approval followed an address to lawmakers by foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi in which he said the government recognised the "full legitimacy" of Venezuela's opposition-held parliament.

In the address, Moavero said Italy did not recognise the legitimacy of Venezuela's leftist president Nicolas Maduro, who was re-elected in a contested 2018 vote marred by an opposition boycott and allegations of vote-rigging which triggered large protests.

Moavero made no explicit reference to Venezuela's National Assembly leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president on 23 January.

The US and most European states have recognised Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader but Maduro has denounced Guaido's move as a US-backed coup bid.
