Italian Senate to host meeting on Mideast resources

International experts will attend a conference on the management and use of natural resources in the Middle East taking place in Rome next week at the Italian Senate.

The meeting, to be held on 26 October under the auspices of Italy's Centre for Peace in the Middle East and the foreign ministry, will focus on energy, water resources, environmental issues, technological innovation and the Blue Economy.

The topics examined at the conference are a "concrete" starting-point to go beyond conflict in the Middle East, according the event's organisers.

"From civil society to business, cultural and scientific organisations, national and local institutions, the management and use of natural resources can become a powerful driving force to forge new forms of cooperation," the meeting organisers said in a statement.

"This applies at the intra-regional level as well as to Italy and Europe," the organisers said.

Junior foreign minister Vincenzo Amendola will open the conference, which will also be attended by the Senate's foreign affairs committee chairman Pier Ferdinando Casini and the foreign ministry's director for Mediterranean and Mideast countries, Diego Brasioli.

Experts from the United States, Egypt, Israel and Turkey as well as Italy are slated to address the meeting.
