The United Nations refugee agency's representative for Italy, Chiara Cardoletti, on Tuesday hailed the country's "key" role in helping UNHCR maintain peace and security and protect refugees.
"In a dramatic period of history, characterised by great international instability, Italy remains a key partner for UNHCR in keeping peace and security in the world and in protecting refugees," Cardoletti stated.
Cardoletti made the remarks as she and the Italian foreign ministry's director-general for migration policies, Luigi Maria Vignali, began a joint four-day mission to Sudan centred on helping refugees fleeing the Horn of Africa.
Currently, UNHCR only has 19% of the funds it needs in Sudan and is urging nations to follow Italy's lead and show solidarity with tens of thousands of refugees there and help them rebuild their lives.
