Italy on Friday flew eight tonnes of medical supplies and drugs to Ethiopia's conflict-hit Tigray province, which over the past five months has been engulfed by one of the world's worst humanitarian and human rights crises.
"This flight is a tangible sign of our commitment to the Tigray region, scarred in recent months by a conflict that has caused victims and suffering to the population," said deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni.
"We want to alleviate this suffering. And to stop hostilities and violence," Sereni added.
The humanitarian flight was organised by the foreign ministry's overseas aid department and took off from the United Nations logistical hub (UNHRD) in Brindisi, southern Italy.
The flight transported 6 tonnes of drugs and medical-health kits, as well as 2 tonnes of drugs made available by the Italian Red Cross.
The airlift, one of the first organised by international donors to land in Tigray, is intended to support the aid activities of the Ethiopian Red Cross in the province.
