Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio has asked the government to increase in overseas aid for civilians in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, which risks economic meltdown.
"I've asked for an increase in aid for Afghan civilians," Di Maio told a documentary on Afghanistan due to be aired late Tuesday by Italy's public broadcaster RAI.
More funding is urgently needed to act to prevent an implosion of the Afghan state apparatus, which will cause uncontrolled migration to bordering countries and destabilised the region, Di Maio warned.
"We must find a way of financing the state to prevent economic collapse without giving money to the Taliban," Di Maio told a documentary on Afghanistan that was due to be aired late on Tuesday.
