Italy's embassy in Afghanistan on Monday deplored a deadly gun attack on Kabul University that killed at least 19 people and injured over 20. The attack was claimed by a regional Islamic State group.

"Italy condemns in the strongest possible terms today's attack on Kabul University, the latest in a string of appalling crimes against educational facilities," the embassy tweeted.

"Attacks on civilians, and especially young bright Afghans investing on their future, need to stop now," the tweet added.

Monday's hours-long assault was eventually stopped when three gunmen were killed, according to an Afghan interior ministry statement.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani said authorities would "take revenge for this senseless attack".

Tuesday has been designated a national day of mourning in Afghanistan.

IS has previously targeted educational institutions in Afghanistan, including an attack outside a tuition centre in Kabul last month that left 24 people dead. The jihadist group also claimed responsibility for an attack in front of Kabul University in 2018 in which dozens were killed.
