Italy offered its "warmest congratulations" to India, Mexico and Ireland and Norway after they were elected to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday in a hotly contested election.
"Our warmest congratulations to the countries India, Ireland, Norway and Mexico elected today to the UNSC for the 2021-2022 mandate," tweeted Italy's diplomatic mission to the UN in New York.
"We look forward to working together," the tweet added.
The new members will start their two-year term on the 15-member council - the top UN decision-making body - on 1 January.
UN member states must return on Thursday to continue voting to fill the final vacant seat after there was no clear winner between Kenya and Djibouti.
