The Italian government could exceed the European Union's 3 percent budget deficit-to-GDP ratio to make sure that schools, bridges and other infrastructure are safe, cabinet underscretary Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Friday.
“If exceeding the 3 percent ceiling is necessary to ensure safety in this country, then yes (it could be done),” Giorgetti said on the sidelines of a conference in Lucca, Tuscany.
"We must table with Europe a serious negotiation on this,” Giorgetti stated.
The government is determined to boost Italy's GDP growth to a rate of "above 2-3 percent" and "it not all happy" with the economy's performance, he added.
