The populist government would like to see another Italian as European Union commissioner for industry in the new executive due to take office later this year, Italy's deputy premier Luigi Di Maio told a conference in Milan on Friday.
"We want to get the industry and business commissioner job back," said Di Maio, who is Italy's industry and welfare minister and leads the ruling grassroots 5 Star Movement.
A new European Commission is due to take office in November following the European elections in May.
EU Parliament president Antonio Tajani was European commissioner for industry and entrepreneurship from February 2010 to July 2014. Tajani was subsequently replaced temporarily in the role by another Italian, Ferdinando Nelli Feroci.
