In a video message on Friday, Italy's first-ever female envoy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, pledged to work for equality of the sexes but also for human rights in general.
"As the first woman ambassador of Italy to the US, Mariangela Zappia vowed to work side by side with our American friends to promote gender equality & human rights," read the tweet, with a link to Zappia's message.
Zappia, a career diplomat, took up her post in Washington as Italy's ambassador to the US on Thursday. She previously served as head of Italy's permanent diplomatic representation at the United Nations in New York.
