Amid Yemen's worsening humanitarian crisis, Italy's deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re has arranged five million euros of emergency aid for the conflict-stricken country's population, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.
A total two million euros of the aid will be allocated to the United Nations World Health Organization to boost basic medical services for Yemenis, the statement said.
A further 1.5 million euros to fund food programmes for children under five will go to the UN World Food Programme, the statement said.
The Red Cross will receive 1.5 million euros of the aid to help it distribute food and relief supplies to those uprooted by the deadly conflict between a Saudi-led military coalition and Shia Houthi rebels which threatens to tip the country into full-blown famine.
Half of Yemen’s 28 million people are already on the brink of starvation and the country is suffering from the worst cholera crisis in modern history.
