Italy's overseas aid department has given more than 340,000 euros to the World Health Organisation to help it provide emergency medical supplies to crisis-hit Sri Lanka, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
Italy's donation comes amid "the worsening economic conditions in Sri Lanka that have triggered a serious crisis in its health service, with shortages of drugs and essential items," the foreign ministry stated.
"The Italian funding will enable the WHO to buy and send medical and sanitary supplies and life-saving medicines that the local authorities have requested and which are needed to give assistance to the most vulnerable," according to the foreign ministry statement.
"The Italian government intends to give concrete support to the Sri Lankan population at this especially difficult time and to show solidarity in a tangible way," the statement underlined.
