Italy holds week of events in Tunis to celebrate Dante

Italy's Institute of Culture in Tunis is organising a rich programme of events in Tunis to celebrate Dante Alighieri on the 700th anniversary of his death, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Three short movies (15 minutes each) will be screened on October 22, filmed in HD (4K) by various directors and videomakers: a tribute to Dante Alighieri, a scenic polyphony between the body and the verses of Dante, with environment sound accompaniment.

One of the events taking place on Thursday via Zoom features two projects realised by B2 level classes for the third edition of the 'Student of the Italian Language Day', organized by Sara D'Isanto with the support of the General Consulate of Italy in Montreal.

On Saturday, the Centre des Arts Dramatiques et Scénques de Sfax, has scheduled “Italian Cinema Days at Sfax”, and will show Federico Fellini's movie 'La Dolce Vita'. The screening is being followed by a round table, organized by Inspector Hichem Said and the Italian teachers with a discussion on Neorealism, according to the statement.

The 'Dante, the Italian' programme of events coincides with the 21st edition of Italian Language Week in the world and the events will be held for audiences on the Institute's Facebook page and YouTube channel, produced in collaboration with the Swiss embassy in Tunisia among others, the statement said.

The programme got under way on Monday with a videoconference on 'Paolo and Francesca, beyond the legend' presented by Raimondo Fassa; this was a discussion on the reading and fundamental themes of Canto V of Dante's Inferno, the statement noted.

A seminar was then held Tuesday in Tunis on the great Italian poet's work, highlighting his contemporary resonance and vitality. Speakers at the seminar included Italy's ambassador, Raffaele Campanella, who gave a talk entitled 'Dante as a political figure, as seen by a diplomat'.
