Italy hosts conference on renewable energy in Africa

German and Italian officials, representatives from the African Union, non-government and intergovernmental organisations on Wednesday attended a meeting on renewable energy sources in Africa being held at the foreign ministry in Rome.

Massiamo Gaiani, the foreign ministry's director-general for globalisation was slated to open the event entitled 'Transition to renewable energy in Africa: what are the implications?" followed by keynote addresses from the International Energy Agency's renewable energy division chief Paolo Frankl and from Martin Schope, division head of the German economy and energy ministry.

Speeches were due to follow from the AU's infrastructure and energy commissioner Amani Abou-Zeid, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa's executive secretary Vera Songwe, and from Italian multinational renewable-energy corporation Enel Green Power's chief executive Antonio Cammisecra.

During the conference, a letter of intent was due to be signed for a 'Programme of renewable energy capacity building' between the AU and Res4Africa non-government organisation.

Abou-Zeid, Songwe and Cammisecra, who is also president of Res4Africa, were also due to hold a press conference.
