Italy, Libya eyeing closer health cooperation

Italy is collaborating with Libya in the health field and is to build hospitals, send medical workers and will treat children who have cancer, premier Mario Draghi announced on Monday.

"We are working on cooperation with Libya in the area of health, and are committed to building hospitals, sending medical staff," Draghi told reporters.

Draghi was speaking at a joint press conference in Rome after talks with his Libyan counterpart Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

"We will also receive here and treat several dozen children who are ill with cancer," Draghi stated.

Italian hospitals have already treated a number of seriously ill Libyan children in recent years.

Italy set up a military field hospital in the coastal city of Misrata in 2016, which has supplied protective body suits, medical equipment and drugs to local authorities to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic.
