Italy looks to boost trade with South Africa

Italy is looking to further strengthen trade with South Africa - its main economic partner in sub-Saharan Africa - as part of a drive to enhance ties with African nations, deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re said on Friday.

Del Re made the remarks during bilateral political consultations between Italy and South Africa in Pretoria, where she and her South African counterpart Alvin Botes led their countries' delegations.

Bilateral relations with South Africa are rooted in Italy's support for the fight against apartheid, Del Re said, expressing hope that economic and trade relations would also be bolstered, according to a foreign ministry statement.

South Africa is Italy's main economic partner in sub-Saharan Africa and trade between the two countries grew by 10.5% in 2018. Italian companies are already operating in the country with investments and technologies, the statement noted.

Del Re and Botes agreed to work together ahead of the upcoming Climate Conference (COP26 taking place in November next year), particularly on the youth event to be held in Italy, the statement said.

"Del Re stressed Italy's wish to enhance our relations with African countries and to contribute to the European Union's relations with the continent. Lastly, she referred to the forthcoming entry into force of the African Free Trade Area as an opportunity to stimulate continental growth and development," the statement concluded.
