Italy and Luxembourg on Tuesday signed an "innovative" memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening dialogue on foreign policy and issues relating to the European Union and other multilateral bodies, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The MoU was inked during a meeting in Rome between foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi, and his Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn, and follows similar bilateral accords signed this year between Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands, the statement said.
Regular meetings will be held between Italy and Luxembourg's foreign ministers each year while their respective ministries will have "structured consultations" every four months and will keep in regular contact, according to the statement.
"Four out of six founding states of the European integration process and of NATO can now operate in very close connection to each other to better coordinate the positions to be adopted," the statement said.
Moavero and Asselborn's talks also allowed for "a broad exchange of views", the statement noted. The meeting centred on migration, the 2021-2027 budget, Britain's planned withdrawal from the EU and other key issues facing the bloc following the election of a new European Parliament in May and the appointment of a new European Commission.
