Italy marks 75th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz

Seventy-five years after Russian troops liberated the Auschwitz death camp, Italy on Monday recalled the millions of Jews killed by Nazi Germany during World War II and vowed to stop such mass murder ever happening again, the foreign ministry tweeted.

"We recall the imperative to honour victims of the #Shoah and to stop a similar tragedy ever re-occurring," read the tweet.

"Italy remains strongly committed to preventing and fighting every form of anti-semitism," the tweet added.

On 27 January, 1945, Russian troops entered the Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland, where at least 1.1 million people including almost one million Jewish men, women and children were systematically killed from 1941-1945.

Six million Jewish people died in the Holocaust - the Nazi campaign to eradicate Europe's Jewish population. Auschwitz was at the centre of the genocide.
