In today's interconnected world, Italy must uphold its national interests by taking part in "global dynamics" which the country's diplomatic service can help navigate, the secretary-general of Italy's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
"In our current world, made up of interconnections, nations defend their autonomy and national interests by taking part in the global dynamics," Elisabetta Belloni stated.
Italian diplomacy is faced with a "crisis of legitimacy" of the multipolar system while social inequality in Italy and elsewhere is on the rise and "the nuclear threat" is re-emerging, Belloni said.
"Now more than ever, diplomacy offers the compass with which to navigate," Belloni underlined.
She was addressing the opening of the 'Diplomacy for Italy' screening at Rome's Auditorium.
The multi-themed outdoor screening presented the three-day XIII Conference of Italian Ambassadors which opened in Rome on Wednesday.
