Italy boasts a 300-square-metre pavilion at the Smart China Expo, which opened on Monday at the International Yuelai Conference Centre in Chongqing, the foreign ministry said in statement.

Italy, together with Great Britain and Singapore, are the Guest of Honour Countries at the four-day event - one of the most important Chinese fairs on science, technology and innovation, according to the statement.

The second edition of the fair hosts 800 Chinese and foreign companies and is being curated by the Italian Consulate General in Chongqing in association with the Italian Trade Agency ICE and the Chamber of Commerce in China, the statement said.

"The Italy Pavilion hosts some of the companies that are particularly representative of the excellence of Italian industry and technology," the statement noted.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by the Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress, Wang Yue, representing local authorities, who highlighted the excellent phase in China-Italy relations in strategic areas such as the aerospace, automotive and semiconductor sectors and new technologies.

Present at the ceremony was also the Minister Counsellor Emanuele de Maigret, the head of the Commercial Office at the Italian Embassy in China, who focused on the importance of Italy's participation with a view to further strengthening bilateral relations in the field of innovation.

On Wednesday, the first edition of the “China-Italy Big Data (Automotive) and Smart Mobility Forum” will take place at the fair.

Organised by the Italian Consulate General in Chongqing, in partnership with the China International Intelligent Industry Expo Organizing Committee, the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute and the Beijing Institute of Technology, the Forum was conceived to explore tangible cooperation options between the academia and industry in Italy and in China, said the statement.
