Italy was re-elected to sit on the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization through 2023 at a meeting of its Regional Commission for Europe held in the Croation capital Zagreb on Wednesday, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"Thanks to the joint action of the foreign, agriculture and tourism ministries, Italy was elected with 25 votes in favour to sit for another four-year term on the UNWTO's governing body together with Turkey, Portugal and France," said the statement.
Croatia's premier Andrej Plenković opened the meeting, which was attended by the country's tourism minister Gari Cappelli and UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili, the statement said.
The Italian delegation at the meeting included foreign and tourism ministry representatives and was led by the Italian ambassador in Zagreb, Adriano Chiodi Cianfarani, the foreign ministry said.
The meeting was attended by 40 representatives from government, the private tourism sector and from academia.
UNWTO is the UN agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism and the international coordination of tourism policies.
