Italy wants to help Israel and the Palestinians de-escalate current tensions as part of a process to kick-start dialogue and remains committed to a negotiated, two-state solution to the conflict.

"Violence cannot lead to a solution. Italy is ready to aid a political process between Israel and Palestine that leads to a resumption of dialogue," foreign minister Antonio Tajani told reporters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

"We really want to lower tensions and bring the two sides closer together," Tajani went on.

"Italy is committed to favouring a two-state solution: a just, sustainable and negotiated peace between the parties," he said.

The Italian government is determined to work for "peace and stability" in the Mediterranean region, Tajani underlined.

"Stopping any kind of violence in the area, from whichever side, is of fundamental importance to us," said Tajani, who is on a three-day visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Tajani's visit comes as Italy's government looks to boost economic, energy, migration management and counter-terrorism collaboration with Mediterranean countries.
