Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Monday underlined Italy's continued backing of stronger strategic ties with North African and Middle Eastern countries on the southern shores of the Mediterranean.
""Reiterated support for the New Agenda for the Mediterranean," read the tweet. It was posted by the foreign ministry after Di Maio attended a European Union Southern Neighbourhood ministerial meeting in Barcelona.
""Also for the promotion and protection of the Mediterranean common goods, and the need to establish an EU partnership with the region," the tweet added.
The New Agenda for the Mediterranean is multi-billion euro investment programme proposed by the European Commission earlier this year to bolster the EU's partnership with Southern Neighbourhood countries across key areas ranging from governance to security, migration, energy and the environment.
