Italy's embassy to the United States on Monday hailed the historic election of California senator Kamala Harris as vice-president, calling her "inspiring".
"Congratulations to Kamala Harris, the first woman to be elected Vice President of the US," the embassy tweeted.
"We echo her inspiring words, which are a prediction for future generations: 'while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last,'" the tweet added.
An earlier tweet praised Democratic president-elect Joe Biden for his pick.
"The choice of Kamala Harris as vice-president is a great achievement for the full recognition of women,” the tweet stated.
Harris is the first woman, and the first Indian American and the first Black woman to win the second-highest US office.
The second-ever Black woman elected a US senator, Harris has a track-record for shattering glass ceilings: she served as San Francisco’s first female district attorney and was California’s first woman of colour to be elected attorney general.
