Italy scrutinising Trump proposal to enlarge G7

Italy is carefully considering United States president Donald Trump's proposal to expand the G7 group of the world's biggest economies to reflect a changing global order, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday.

"Italy pays close attention to any proposal that can enhance international dialogue especially if it comes from our allies," Di Maio said in Berlin, where he held talks with his German counterpart Heiko Maas.

Trump told journalists last month he wants India, Russia, Australia, and South Korea to join the G7, which he called "a very outdated group of countries".

"We want Australia. We want India. We want South Korea, Trump said aboard Airforce One as he headed to Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, on May 30.

Trump also listed Russia and said he had "roughly discussed" the idea with the four countries, according to a pool report.

Trump also told reporters he plans to invite South Korea to a G7 summit in the autumn.
