Italian prosecutors said Wednesday they were awaiting a response from Kenyan counterparts to a request for court documents relating to 23-year-old aid worker Silvia Romano's unsolved kidnapping in November.

Romano was abducted from her accommodation in the village of Chakama in Kilifi County, some 80 kilometres from the coastal resort of Malindi, during an armed attack on 20 November.

Prosecutors in Rome have asked local Kenyan magistrates to share all information they have on Romano's kidnapping, into which they have opened a terrorism probe.

Italy and Kenya have no judicial cooperation treaty meaning the Rome prosecutors have asked for the court documents as a favour.

Last week, premier Giuseppe Conte said Italian authorities continued to follow the case "but unfortunately, we haven't yet got to the bottom of it".

Initial lines of enquiry followed by Kenyan investigators included Roman's kidnapping by a local gang aiming to get a ransom for her release or by militants from Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Romano was working as a volunteer for the Africa Milele NGO based in Torno in Italy's eastern March region.
