Amid rising tensions between the US and Iran over its nuclear work and following a US airstrike on 25 February on alleged Iran-backed militants in eastern Syria, Italy wants to aid "constructive dialogue" with Tehran, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday.

Italy is willing and able to play a proactive role to facilitate constructive dialogue with Tehran," Di Maio told a press conference in Rome after talks with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian.

Italy's goal is to "safeguard" the landmark 2015 deal under which Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

Engaging in dialogue aimed at preserving the 2015 deal between Iran and six world powers including the US "will contribute to non-proliferation and stability in the region," Di Maio said.
