Italy foresees a "prosperous" future with Ethiopia, deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re tweeted on Monday after an Ethiopian court pardoned two ex-officials of Mengistu Hailemariam's military regime, who sheltered in the Italian embassy for 29 years.
"An old page of history has definitely been turned. Italy and Ethiopia share a long and prosperous future together," read the tweet.
"Italy rejects the death penalty anywhere and at any time," the tweet added.
Berhanu Bayeh and Addis Tedla, respectively Mengistu's former foreign minister and chief of general staff, were convicted of genocide in absentia in 2006 and sentenced to death for their role in mass killings of Mengistu’s opponents.
