Italy steps up aid for Ukrainian refugees

Italy has teamed up with two United Nations agencies to make available a further 10 million euros to help Moldova host hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees who have entered the country since Russia invaded their homeland on 24 February.

An initiative developed with the UN children's fund UNICEF aims to improve access to education and essential services for minors and help support their families, Italy's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The second project, forged with the UN's migration agency (IOM) will provide support to Moldovan institutions to identify unaccompanied minors, streamline the processing of administrative paperwork, and strengthen local NGOs helping protect vulnerable groups of refugees, said the statement.

The projects announced on Thursday come on top of another 10 million euro project with UNHCR, which was announced by foreign minister Luigi Di Maio during his visit to Moldova on 15 March 2022.

During Di Maio's visit, he and his Moldovan counterpart Nicolae Popescu inked an accord on strengthening cooperation in the field of migration.

The donations follow calls for aid made by Moldova's authorities, which are facing "an unprecedented challenge in the country's history", said the statement.
