Italy on Thursday thanked Norway for sending a medical team to help frontline hospital staff battle the dramatic coronavirus outbreak which has killed more people than in any other country in the world.
"My friend and colleague Ine Eriksen Soreide, whom I can't thank enought for her empathy and solidarity, told me the doctors and nurses who arrived yesterday couldn't wait to get to Italy to support their colleagues," Di Maio wrote on social media.
"We are grateful - it is a major demonstration of respect and friendship," Di Maio went on.
The Norwegian medical team is made up of 30 doctors and nurses, Soreide - Norway's foreign minister - told Di Maio in a phonecall earlier this week.
