Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Wednesday thanked Turkey for sending face masks and other supplies to help Italy protect medical staff at the frontline of Italy's dramatic Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak.
"A big gesture of solidarity towards Italy arrived today from Turkey. We are receiving such solidarity from so many countries and we are grateful," Di Maio tweeted.
"Our diplomatic activity doesn't stop. We keep moving forwards with the utmost commitment," the tweet added.
Turkey sent the medical items in response to call from Italy via NATO, the Turkish foreign ministry tweeted.
"Our cargo aircraft delivered masks, jumpsuits and disinfection liquid. Turkey stands in solidarity by its NATO Ally Italy in these difficult times," read the tweet which contained the Turkish and Italian flags.
