The government will offer financial incentives to firms with a low environmental impact, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio told Italian politicians, business and agriculture associations and cooperatives at a virtual meeting on Tuesday.
"We will reward those companies that do less damage to the environment by giving them climate funding incentives," Di Maio said.
Italy's manufacturing industry has a smaller carbon footprint than its international competitors, Di Maio underlined.
He was addressing the 9th annual meeting of the coordination unit for Italy's internationalisation strategy. Di Maio and Italy's economic development minister Stefano Patuanelli co-chaired the virtual meeting, which was also being live-streamed on the foreign ministry's website.
The meeting was attended by signatories of Italy's Export Pact unveiled in June to propel Italian exports globally in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic especially in the innovation and technology sectors. The pact was inked by Di Maio, Italy's economic development, finance, agriculture, transport, universities and research, culture and technological innovation ministries, export agency ICE, service provider SIMEST and over 20 business, agriculture associations as well its main association of cooperatives.
