Italy to treat two Libyan children with Thalassemia

Two Libyan children with Thalassemia arrived in Rome on Thursday where they will receive treatment at the Bambin Gesu pediatric hospital.

The two children will first undergo a series of tests which are not available in Libya, the Italian agency for development cooperation (AICS) said in a statement.

The Bambin Gesu hospital will then develop individual treatment for the children in the coming weeks to cure them of their illness, the statement said.

Nine children have already received treatment as part of the same humanitarian programme for Libyan minors suffering from blood cancers and blood disorders, some of whom have received bone marrow transplants.

Three of the nine children treated so far under the programme have successfully completed treatment and have returned to Libya.

During their treatment in Italy, the children receive teaching and the adults accompanying them are given social and psychological assistance via Arabic language cultural mediators.

The programme is funded by Italy's overseas aid department and delivered through an agreement between AICS and the Bambin Gesu, according to the statement.
