Italian paramilitary Carabinieri police said on Friday they had completed the training of 405 members of Somali and Djibouti security forces to current international standards.
During the five-month course, participants were trained in battlefield and urban combat, first aid, maintaining security, firing weapons, carrying out searches and handcuffing, the Carabinieri Training Unit for Somalia and Djibouti (MIADIT) said.
"You will make a valuable contribution and hold the key to keeping the peace in Djibouti and in Somalia, strengthening the conditions for creating stability in the entire Horn of Africa region," Carabinieri general Gino Micale said at a passing-out ceremony.
Graduates from the course included 180 Somali police officers and 225 policemen and gendarmes from Djibouti, according to MIADIT.
Such courses are designed "to provide professional knowledge and skills to build versatile and modern police operatives who are able to effectively tackle security threats in the region at this delicate moment in time," MIADIT said.
