Joint efforts to fight illegal immigration, terrorism and drugs trafficking were the focus of a videoconference Thursday between Italy's interior minister Luciana Lamorgese and her Turkish counterpart Suleyman Soylu, the interior ministry said in a statement.

Lamorgese and Soylu agree on the need to implement a 2018 bilateral accord between Italian and Turkish police, according to the statement.

During the videoconference, the two ministers "paid maximum attention to the themes of security, counter-terrorism and stemming the influx of migrants heading to Italy, the statement concluded.
