Italy called for "a rapid start to the democratic transition" in Mali during phone talks on Thursday between deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re and the Niger's foreign minister Kalla Ankourao.

"Mr Ankourao and Ms Del Re reiterated the expectation of a rapid start to the democratic transition in Mali, with a clear timetable and civilian leadership," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Ankourao debriefed Del Re on the meeting he attended in Accra on Tuesday between the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the military government that overthrew Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on 18 August.

Italy will continue all humanitarian activities in the country aimed at supporting the population, and may seek further support from European and African partners, Del R told Ankourao, according to the statement.
