Italy and the United States are working together "particularly closely" in the Mediterranean region - including flashpoints like Libya - in the areas of defence, anti-terrorism and energy, according to foreign minister Luigi Di Maio.
"Rome and Washington are cooperating particularly closely in the Mediterranean region within the framework of strategic Italy-US dialogue," Di Maio told a virtual event on Tuesday to mark the 160th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.
Italy-US collaboration in the Mediterranean is focussed on crisis areas including Libya and on cooperation in defence, counter-terrorism and energy, said Di Maio, who was in Washington on a two-day visit.
"Together with the US we will spearhead efforts aimed at stabilising Iraq and we are on the front line in the fight against terrorism through the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS," he stated.
The online event was organised by the Italian embassy in Washington and by the Atlantic Council and the Institute for International Political Studies think-tanks.
