Prospects for bilateral economic cooperation, especially in the energy sector were at the centre of talks in Rome on Wednesday between Italy's foreign undersecretary, Manlio Di Stefano, and Uzbekistan's energy minister, Alisher Sultanov, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
“We are extremely satisfied with the level reached by our economic partnership," said Di Stefano.
"But we believe that it is above all a promising basis to develop further collaboration in new sectors. Italian companies invest when the business climate improves. "
Italy hopes to strengthen its relations with Uzbekistan and with the Central Asian region, Di Stefano said.
Di Stefano and Sultanov underlined their readiness to cooperate in view of the second meeting of the Italy-Central Asia Ministerial Conference in the 1 + 5 format, according to the statement. The first meeting, held in December 2019 at the foreign ministry, was attended by the foreign ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and the deputy foreign ministers of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
The 13 December 2019 meeting was opened by Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and chaired by Di Stefano.
