Italy's foreign undersecretary Ivan Scalfarotto praised the Swiss government's decision on Friday to reopen the borders with Italy from 15 June, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"I thank the Swiss government for the decision to reopen the borders with Italy as from 15 June, in line with what Bern has established concerning Germany, France and Austria," said Scalfarotto.
"This is a decision we particularly appreciate," he added.
The announcement follows extensive contact in recent weeks between Scalfarotto and Swiss colleagues, Scalfarotto said.
"It acknowledges the cooperation and transparency that our government has ensured to our Swiss friends during the most critical phase of the Covid-19 emergency, when we worked to protect cross-border workers," he said, referring to 70,000 Italians who commute to Switzerland each day.
"The decision encourages us to continue on the path of bilateral cooperation to resolve the issues that remain unresolved quickly," he concluded.
