Italy on Thursday hailed a vote by the United Nations' top human rights body to appoint a special rapporteur to monitor abuses in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
"A great result for diplomacy and fruit also of the many missions and meetings that have taken place in recent weeks," tweeted foreign under-secretary Benedetto Della Vedova.
Meeting in Geneva, the 49-member UN Human Rights Council adopted a European Union-led resolution endorsed mainly by European and Latin American countries, voting 28 to 5 in favour, with 14 abstentions.
Under the resolution, the special rapporteur and a team of specialist advisors will start work by March next year.
