Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Wednesday hailed the deal reached between the United States and the European Union to extend a tariff truce for five years, ending a multi-billion euro 17-year trade dispute.
"New of the agreement reached between the EU and the US on the Airbus-Boeing dispute is excellent news for our companies, especially those in the food and agriculture sector, who will no longer have to shoulder the burden," Di Maio stated.
"This is a tangible sign of how the alliance between Europe and the US is entering a fruitful new era since the adminstration of (US president Joe) Biden took office (in January)," Di Maio went on.
"Effective cooperation and shared outlooks and values will be a source of great relief to exporters on both sides of the Atlantic."
Under the agreement reached in Brussels on Tuesday, both sides will remove taxes on 11.5 billion euros of goods, including wine, cheese and tractors, for five years.
Italy has always worked "with conviction" to achieve the truce on tariffs between the EU and US, Di Maio stated.
"This tariff truce....comes on top of the extraordinary exports achieved by Italy, which in the first three months of this year were worth 118 billion euros," Di Maio underlined.
Boeing and Airbus have said they welcome the truce
