Italy won't wait to re-start coronavirus-hit economy says minister

Italy will not delay in kick-starting its coronavirus-hit economy but "global action" is needed to revive international trade damaged by the Covid-19 pandemic, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Monday.

"We need to start paving the way for a strong re-launch of our economy and global action is needed to achieve this. I will spend every day promoting Italian products abroad, to honour our nation," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.

"Workers, companies, the 'Made in Italy' brand, exports, foreign trade must all be safeguarded. Everyone must be," read Di Maio's post.

Earlier on Monday in a video conference with Group of Twenty (G20) foreign ministers, Di Maio said he urged global action to boost flagging trade amid the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

"I underlined to ministers that Italy does not intend to wait - it wants to react. The government will continue to give citizens financial help," Di Maio wrote.

The Italian government already approved a 25 billion euro stimulus package earlier in March and has promised another one next month of at least the same size.

"Indeed, in April, we will need a new decree allocating billions of euros of investments to help families, workers and businesses," Di Maio's post added.

"We won't stop. We will keep going with utter determination."
