Italy's Alfano heads to Lebanon amid electoral law stand-off

Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano will hold talks in Lebanon on Thursday with its president Michel Aoun and other top officials amid a deepening crisis in the country, where politicians are deadlocked over a new electoral law.

The top Italian diplomat is also slated to meet parliament speaker Nabih Berri, premier Saad Hariri and Lebanese foreign minister Gebran Bassil during the one-day visit, the Italian foreign ministry said.

Alfano and Bassil will hold a joint press conference after their talks, the foreign ministry stated.

Alfano will wrap up his trip with a visit to the United Nations UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, whose Sector West is under Italian command, and will address troops from the Italian contingent in Shama.

Italy is currently contributing 1,239 peacekeepers to the 10,769-strong force, according to UNIFIL.
