Italy's envoy to Libya, Giuseppe Buccino had "constructive" talks in Tripoli on Wednesday with Libyan navy chief Abdul Hakim Abuholia and the head of its coastguard, Abdallah Toumia, Buccino tweeted.

"Constructive meeting today of Amb @giuseppbuccino with the Chief of the Libyan Navy Admiral Abdul Hakim Abuholia and the Chief of the Libyan Coast Guard Adm Abdallah Toumia," read the tweet.

"Our bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened," the tweet added.

With European Union backing, Italy's navy has been training and equipping Libyan coastguard to carry out migrant search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean and to return migrants to Libya.

Libya's coastguard picked up over 15,000 people and took them back to Libya last year amid international concern over the treatment of migrants in the war-wracked country's detention centres.

Italy's populist government has closed Italian ports to migrant rescue ships, introduced hefty fines for boats entering Italian territory without permission and has taken legal steps against some organisations.

It is continuing to pressure the EU to make other member states take a fairer share of rescued migrants and would also like other country's ports also to be used to land the migrants.
