Italy's ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi has held talks with powerful eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar near the port city of Benghazi, the embassy tweeted on Tuesday.
The meeting betwen Buccino Grimaldi and Haftar took place at the military headquarters of Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army in al-Rajma, according to the tweet.
Buccino Grimaldi took over this month as Italy's envoy to Libya from Giuseppe Perrone, who served as in the role since January 2017, when Italy's was the only western embassy operating in Tripoli.
The Italian government recalled Perrone in August last year after he told a Libyan TV channel that security conditions in the oil-rich country prevented elections being held the near future - comments that prompted Haftar to say Perrone was unwelcome in Libya.
